One of the best overall Openwater to Advanced SCUBA Instructors in this part of the Country, Spencer Phillips has been diving here at Southern Skin Divers Supply all his life.  For over three decades he has assisted in certifying thousands of divers.  He holds an Instructor or higher rating with Scuba Diving International (SDI), NAUI, IDEA  and SSI.  In 2009 Spencer was a recipient of the SSI Platinum Pro 5000 Inst Award being one of the youngest to receive it at the time. 

 For over 15 years Spencer was one of the primary recovery and evidence divers for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Dept Dive Team.  Evidence he often recovered help solve many cases while he was a Reserve Deputy.  His reputation and experience teaching low visibility and recovery diving is second to none.  He wrote the Solo Diver Course here at SSDS that Law Enforcement Agencies like the Jefferson County Dive Team, Smith Lake Task Force and the Walker County Dive Team as well as so many of our individual students have taken.  He also developed the Self Rescue Course offered here and other locations to private groups like Vulcan Materials. 

Spencer grew up diving with his father, Steve Phillips, a renowned Artifact and Relic Diver and Historian. He has logged many thousands of dives in rivers in the South recovering Artifacts and Fossils and in and near the Bering Sea for Gold.  

Spencer also is one of the Primary Scuba Instructors for nearby Military Schools, Southern Preparatory Academy and Marion Military Institute (MMI).
